Essential oils & your pets
Ok
Did you know nearly 68% of Uk households own a pet and at some point will require support for their wellness needs. It’s important to have a veterinarian to provide needed care for your pet, however YOU can also offer support in non-emergency situations with a wellness toolbox for your pet care using CPTG certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils.
Do your research with the essential oils you intend to use on your pet
When using essential oils with pets ensure you are using top quality oils. You'll be amazed how many adulterated oils there are, because the EO market is unregulated!
Make sure your oils are steam-distilled or cold-pressed
Many essential oils are filled with chemicals that are very toxic to pets. If your oils aren’t pure, there’s always a risk of chemical reaction, even if you’re only diffusing. Therefore use essential oils that have been tested for purity, using brands you know and trust and that have test results that are accessible to the public.
My personal choice of essential oils to use with my pets, in my home and for my family is dōTERRA. Every batch of dōTERRA essential oil undergoes rigorous third-party and internal testing to ensure your products are free of adulteration. From the source to you, dōTERRA essential oils are certified pure, which means you enjoy perfect peace of mind when you choose to bring them into your home .
DōTERRA make it easy to evaluate their oil quality giving me total confidence in their purity. All you have to do is enter the SKU number on the bottom of the oil at the "Source to you" website to see each batch’s quality reports.
Dr Janet Roark veterinarian, recommends Doterra essential oils and says the best rule of thumb is to "kept it simple and safe"
I follow Dr Roake's suggestions for how to safely use your essential oils with your pets
When I introduce oils to my dogs I am always led by their choice, just as our tastes differ, so do animals.
A dogs smell is very powerful and often my dogs can smell a bottle even with the lid on. Once they show interest in an oil with the lid on, I then remove the lid and stand the bottle on the floor, and am guided by which bottle my dog is drawn to. I always leave a door open so they can leave the room if they don't like the smell.
Essential oils have numerous benefits for your pets. They can help with calming emotions, soothing muscles, deodorising unpleasant aromas, and maintaining overall wellness for your furry family members.
As with any new product you introduce to your pet, begin slowly.
Start with a small amount of the chosen oil in a diffuser, and then observe your pet’s behaviour.
Diffuse. Keep your diffusers in a safe place where your pet can’t knock it over. When you’re diffusing, be sure to use a water-based diffuser and only diffuse four to five drops at a time in an open area, where your pet can leave the room if desired.
Dilute. Before using oils topically on your pets, first consult with your veterinarian. Always dilute essential oils down to 1–2 % (one drop of essential oil: 100 drops of carrier oil) before topical application. Dilute even more for animals under 10 pounds.
Caution DO NOT USE
Tea Tree (Melaleuca)
Wintergreen
Peppermint
Birch
These cannot be used internally, topically or aromatically with dogs and cats
My top tips
Always use diluted oils with animals
Keep the door open to allow your pet to come and go as they please.
Use common sense when applying to your pet. The same recommendations for people apply to pets. If you wouldn’t apply it to your body in a specific way, don’t do it on your pets
Petting -Some animals prefer gentle petting to massage or spot treatment. Apply a diluted essential oil to clean hands and pet your furry friend either all over the body or on affected areas. (Pet hair sticks to moisture, so this step could get messy.) Not only will your animal benefit from the essential oils, but the physical touch can also strengthen the bond between you and your furry companion!
Here are some recipes of blends I have used with my dogs:
Lavender
know for its calming properties, cultivates a soothing atmosphere for pets and people alike.
I diffuse to promote relaxation and I have found it great for calming
a pup during stressful times, like thunderstorms or fireworks
or I add a drop or 2 on a blanket for trips to the vet or groomer
DigestZen® or Tamer®
These blends are a must in my pet wellness toolbox, if my dogs are showing signs of tummy discomfort, I have used both options for rolling on my dog's tummy.
Copaiba
can promote relaxation and support muscles and joints,
a godsend when my dogs start to age and get stiff and
in the past have kept me away from the steroid path
for my collies Maya and Prince.
doTERRA Balance®
This is another blend that is my go to, supporting comfort
and grounding whenever my pups has been showing signs of nervousness.
My recent puppy Rua had a bit of anxiousness
I apply it topically or add a couple of drops to a diffuser combined with
lavender
Frankincense
"if in doubt get Frank out" cleansing and soothing, Frankincense is perfect
minor skin irritations and odour control, in fact I use this in my family toolbox too.
Pest repellants

is my go to for Pest repellant, it also supports feelings of easy breathing
and promotes a relaxing atmosphere for fearful or timid animals
Terrashield
